Google Now Buys Online Collaboration Operator Doc Verse

Google acquired a company that allows Microsoft Office users to their documents with collaboration on the Web. The acquisition of Doc Verse will no doubt allow the users who are married to Word, PowerPoint and Excel to edit their documents through services of Google.

Google and Doc Verse made their announcement, with each noting that transitioning to cloud document storage and collaboration has been like a challenge for Office users. Google further said that the current Doc Verse users will be able to continue using the service, but the new sign ups have been closed until the company is ready to share what is next. This is of no doubt a foreshadowing of Google's plan to mix Doc Verse capabilities into Google Docs that allows its users to collaborate simultaneously on Google-hosted word processing, presentation documents and spreadsheet.

The move is just one another step in Google's strategy to chip away at Microsoft's dominance in the productivity space. Although, there are ways for Office users to share documents online- Share Point is a popular solution among businesses, but according to the functionality it is still different from what is offered through Google Docs. The Doc Verse acquisitions, combined with Google's recently announced file- storage capabilities. It will help beef up Google Docs to a point where it will be even difficult for small businesses to resist signing up for Google Applications.
